Her face upturned, eyes shut, Abe admired the fine sculpture of Vienna’s face, the delicate arch of her cheekbones, the fullness of her lips. A lock of hair curled across her temple and down her neck. She inhaled, a breathy sigh, and wriggled against him. He smiled.

She’d surprised him after they settled, showing genuine interest in what he did for a living and asking intelligent questions. She’d then joked about the food truck and told stories, some of them amusing, about the people she saw on a daily basis.

“It’d be nice to have help,” she’d said. “Some days I’m swamped, and, of course, there’s no one to talk to. But I’m pretty happy. It pays my bills and helps my parents out.”

Abe picked the lock of hair from her neck and brushed it behind her shoulders. She moved one hand, draping it over his waist, her fingers curved in midair. He gazed a while longer, then shut his eyes and drifted away. The steady buzz of a cell phone crept in his brain hours later. One eye cracked, he looked downward at Vienna, but she hadn’t moved. Twisting his neck, he spotted her cell vibrating on the coffee table and considered answering, then opted not to. Eventually, it quit and he drifted off again.

A second round of vibrations, minutes later, roused him once more. He ignored it again, but unable to sleep, was wide awake when it rang the third time. His thoughts were two-fold. First, that Vienna hadn’t heard any of it. Clearly, she was a heavy sleeper. Second, it must be important for whomever to keep calling.

One eye on Vienna, he leaned outward, stretching his fingers, and slid the device into his palm. He returned to his prone position and read the caller’s name. Mom. Mrs. Stumpf. After how hasty they’d left, he was probably the last person her parents wanted to speak with, but for them to call so many times at this hour made it serious. Inhaling, Abe tapped the answer button and brought it to his ear. “Hello?”

A pause came on the other end. “I thought I called my daughter,” Vienna’s mother said.

Abe cleared his throat. “You did. She’s asleep. This is Abe.”

Silence filled the conversation. Mrs. Stumpf gave a slight breath, her voice rattled. “It’s her father ... his heart ...”

Abe pulled himself more upright. “Where are you?”

“Memorial Hospital. Please ... I’m worried.”

“We’ll be right there.” He hung up and reached for Vienna’s shoulders. Shaking her gently, he tilted her face toward his.

One eye cracked.

“Hey. Your mom called.”

Her other eye snapped open.

“Your dad’s in the hospital. We’ve gotta go.”

“Dad ...?” One hand scrubbing across her brow, she pushed to her feet, but wobbled. He gripped her shoulder until she’d settled. Then, hands shaking, she stumbled toward the door.

“I’ll drive,” he said.

In the car, she shut her eyes, the heel of her hand mashed to the bridge of her nose. “I knew he’d overdone it,” she said. “He can’t afford to get that upset. If he dies and it’s my fault .
